PRODUCT DESCRIPTION :

 

Such a lovely size double sided vitreous enamel sign with embossed  light blue and black shadow font.

 

J. Pullar & Sons, commonly known as Pullars of Perth, was a world-renowned Scottish dye-works and dry-cleaning firm founded in 1824 by John Pullar. Based in Perth, the company pioneered synthetic dyes in the 1850s, became Scotland's first dry cleaners, and operated with over 7,500 agents across Britain by the 1920s. 

 

This sign was manufactured by Patent Enamel Co of Selly Oak, Birmingham, England and dates circa early 20th Century.

 

Benjamin Baugh developed the process of making enameled iron plate signs for advertising. He patented his process in 1859, and ran Salt's Patent Enamel Works in Bradford Street, Birmingham.

 

In 1888 The company was registered on 18 March, to take over the business carried on at Birmingham under the name of the Patent Enamel Co..

1889 Baugh opened the sign factory at Selly Oak, Birmingham under the name of Patent Enamel Co Ltd.

 In 1894 This company went into liquidation in July, and reconstruction took place under the same title, the present company being registered on 17 July. 

 

This great sign has bags of character, history, patina and general splendour and will recieve general nods of approval wherever you choose to display it.

 

 

SIZE :  478mm x 343mm 

 

 

CONDITION : Overall very good for age. General age related marks, scratches, wear and patina. One side has significant surface rust area. Sign still shows good colour and is solid and stable.
